EXHIBITION "LIVING FOR ART"
NOVEMBER 24 - APRIL 28, 2024
JULES CHÉRET MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS
The Jules Chéret Museum of Fine Arts, the Palais Lascaris, the Masséna Museum and the Cessole Library present the exhibition Living for Art. The Trachel and Rothschild collections in Nice*. This exhibition highlights the works generously donated to the City of Nice by these two great families. These donations, made between 1888 and 1912, include more than seventeen hundred works of various types: archaeological objects, drawings, watercolours, paintings, sculptures, prints, but also furniture, ceramics and textiles. They are at the heart of the collections of Nice's museums.
This project is also an opportunity to rediscover the thousands of watercolour landscapes in Nice and across Europe by the Trachel brothers, Hercules, Dominique and Antoine, as well as those of Baroness Charlotte de Rothschild, whose teacher and friend Hercules was. From the picturesque to the satirical, sometimes with an ethnographic and historical dimension, these artists have been able to paint a varied portrait of their land of origin or choice.
Also involved in the art trade, the organization of exhibitions, the local music and theatre scene as well as artistic education, such as Françoise and Fanny Trachel, founders and directors of the municipal school of drawing, now Villa Thiole, the exhibition will highlight the networks of artistic sociability that worked to the emergence of the art worlds of the Côte d'Azur in the nineteenth century.
